VI 3.0.1 Update is Released

by @ 7:38 am. Filed under Virtualization

VMware has recently released VI 3.0.1. This is a minor update to the VI 3 product. This update brings some nice new features:

  • Support for selected 64-bit guest operating systems. For more information, see Systems Compatibility Guide for ESX Server 3.x.
  • Improved upgrade support from Virtual Infrastructure 2 to VMware Infrastructure 3. For more information, see Installation and Upgrade Guide.
  • Introduction of the esxupdate utility for upgrade deployment. For more information, see Installation and Upgrade Guide.
  • Support for servers based on the AMD 2000/8000 and Intel Xeon 7100 (codename Tulsa) series of processors.
  • Enablement of QLogic QLA 4050/4052 hardware iSCSI HBAs. See ESX Server 3.x I/O Compatibility Guide and ESX Server 3.x Storage/SAN Compatibility Guide for the latest support status because testing and certification is not yet complete at the time of these release notes publication.
  • Support for iSCSI arrays such as EqualLogic PS300 and NetApp FAS3000.
  • Support for Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) on Windows XP virtual machines.
  • Critical bug fixes related to ESX Server 3.0 and VirtualCenter 2.0.
  • Enablement for German and Japanese product versions. Note: Please check the VMware web site periodically for availability of the German and Japanese versions of the product.

(The most exciting of these new features for me is the support of 64-bit guest operating systems.)

There are also a number of bug fixes that are come with this new release also. Too many to list here. There is one known bug that I’ve been watching for some time now, and I’m concerned that it isn’t listed as “resolved”.

Currently there is a know bug with Microsoft Clustering Services in Windows 2003 SP1. Win 2K3 SP1 Clustering doesn’t work. I was told that VMware development had a fix that they and Microsoft were testing now, so I’m suprised that the fix hasn’t been released. You can read about the known bug here.
